Using a Garmin Quest, or some other Garmin devices, add the following,

sudo apt-get install qlandkartegt

Using Live Log, gps connected to raspi.

Import way-points, tracks & routes.

Raspi in the field, we are using a deep-cycle 12V Battery. Connected to a  330Watt Converter.

Adding a solar panel and 12v regulator, one can easily spend time doing research months on end.
